BUSH 685 Directed Study

Readings and Research in Homeland Security
3 Credit Hours
Offered every Summer - Fall – Spring
Dr. David H. McIntyre

No prerequisites!  Any Texas A&M graduate student and selected seniors may apply.

This individual study program will provide the student an in depth understanding of a selected aspect of homeland security, as well as a professional product and experience that may be cited later during the search for business or government employment.

The program consists of four parts:
1. Initial readings and meetings with faculty and others to ensure the student has a grounding in the major strategic and policy issues of homeland security (5 weeks).
2. In depth student research of a specific issue (selected by the student but approved by the professor – 8 weeks).
3. A brief student progress report to faculty at 2 week intervals.
4. Student products, which will consist of:

  • An annotated bibliography of 80 quality sources on the subject, each entry consisting of  a bibliographic reference, a one paragraph summary of major points, a list of key words, and a web address with date (if available).
  • A 20 minute “job talk” summarizing the issue, the research, and any key conclusions.  The talk will be open to the Bush School faculty and student body as a whole.

Student products judged to be of sufficient quality will be posted to the web site of the Texas A&M Integrative Center for Homeland Security, at homelandsecurity.tamu.edu.

This program is open to all Texas A&M graduate students and selected undergraduate seniors, but is especially well suited to students who:

  • Are anticipating employment in the homeland security field and wish to demonstrate expertise to a prospective employer, or
  • Are anticipating an internship with some agency connected with homeland security, or
  • Wish to broaden their expertise in this new field of study while sharpening research skills.
