The National Disaster Medical System (NDMS) is a section within the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Federal Emergency Management Agency, Response Division, Operations Branch, and is responsible for supporting federal agencies in the management and coordination of federal medical response in times of major emergencies and federally declared disasters. These include:
• Natural disasters
• Technological disasters
• Major transportation accidents
• Acts of terrorism, such as Weapons of Mass Destruction events
NDMS is a nation-wide partnership providing communities with medical and emotional care in the wake of a natural or manmade disaster.
The three components offered are:
• Medical response to a disaster area in the form of teams, supplies, and equipment
• Patient movement from a disaster site to unaffected areas of the nation
• Definitive medical care at participating hospitals in unaffected areas
The mission of the National Disaster Medical System is to design, develop, and maintain a national capability to deliver quality medical care to the victims of, and responders to, a domestic disaster.
