Summary of Key Points, Issues, Conclusions:
This hearing addresses the issues of the status of the current terrorist threat to the US homeland and current efforts to confront the threat. Secretary Chertoff overviewed DHS’s role and efforts to keep dangerous people and cargo out of the country and to protect critical infrastructure and information sharing efforts. Director of National Intelligence McConnell discussed the findings of the July 2007 National Intelligence Estimate on the Terrorist Threat to the US Homeland, the transformation of the Intelligence Community both structurally and qualitatively. Director Redd of the National Counterterrorism Center testified on the nation’s analysis, information sharing, and interagency collaboration efforts to confront the terrorist threat. Finally, FBI Director Mueller testified about FBI’s efforts to counter terrorism, specifically focusing on homegrown radicalization, IEDs, WMDs and the alignment of the FBI to effectively combat these threats.
