Summary of Key Issues, Points, Conclusions:
Following the collapse of the World Trade Centers, the National Institute of Standards and Technology began an in-depth investigation into the safety of building construction and maintenance standards. Specific changes to improve the safety of buildings, their occupants, and first responders were addressed within the final report. Aiming to provide safer and more effective evacuation and emergency response practices, the NIST offered thirty recommendations.
Central to these recommendations are;
- specific improvements to building standards, codes and practices;
- changes to, or the creation of, evacuation and emergency response procedures; and
- research and other appropriate actions needed to prevent future building failures.
