“In the last year, we have doubled our working area, and added a Ph.D. senior research assistant to our team,” said Dr. David H. McIntyre, ICHS director. “In 2008, we expect to double our space again to accommodate three additional PhDs, and will add more people as grants and work loads demand.
“These are exciting times for ICHS and for Texas A&M,” he said, “especially as we move toward establishing an interdisciplinary master’s degree program that will redefine the field of homeland security studies for the entire nation.”
The report looks back the progress ICHS made during 2007 in its education, research and outreach programs. Highlights include:
- Receiving permission form the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board to develop a master’s degree program in homeland security studies.
- Launching a robust program that experiments with applying cutting edge technology in innovative ways to improve learning.
- Expanding the weekly public radio program, “Homeland Security: Inside & Out” from 30 minutes to a full hour.
- Posting more than 4,000 summaries of foundational documents and links in the center’s online portal Taxonomy for Education and eXploration.
The report also looks forward to the center’s goals for 2008, including:
- Admitting students to courses that are designated to become part of the master’s degree program.
- Improving online access to more than 200 radio programs and 500 interviews for students and scholars.
- Promoting collaboration with multidisciplinary faculty across Texas A&M interested in teaching homeland security issues in the context of their personal expertise and disciplines.
